Filmmakers, videographers and video enthusiasts need not rely solely on YouTube any more, because now there is Vimeo.
Vimeo.com is a new website for uploading and sharing video files.
A wide variety of videos are posted on this site. It is a good place for up-and-coming video creators, or even professionals who want to show off what they have created.
Using the site is easy. First you have to sign up by clicking the button at the top right of the screen. This will direct you to two account options, one is “basic” and the other is “plus”.
The basic account gives you fewer benefits than the latter, offering only one kind of high-quality video format, while the plus option offers higher-quality video formats. With the basic option you can upload 500 MB per week, while the plus allows up to 5 GB per week.
Normally, you can only upload one high-definition (HD) video per week, but the plus option allows you unlimited HD uploading, along with some other perks.
If you sign up for the plus option, the site will charge you US$59.95 (Rp 535,000) per year, or $9.95 per month. For those of you who have dedicated your life to video or filmmaking and have the budget, the plus option is definitely worth it.
Because this website is intended for videographers and filmmakers, there are guidelines when it comes to uploading videos.
You cannot upload videos which are compilations of scenes from TV shows or movies, video games or videos intended for commercial use.
Vimeo also allows users to upload videos directly from mobile phones.
The site offers a desktop uploading function so one can upload videos straight from your desktop without opening an Internet browser.
Do not worry if you are not the most gadget-savvy person. The site provides tutorials so you can navigate the site with ease.
One other thing to remember is to update your profile. Yes, just like Facebook and other social networking sites, you can upload photos, a biography and personal websites to make it easier for other members to recognize you.
If you’re just another video enthusiast and not really into making videos or films, no worries.
The site offers many types of videos to watch, from NGO campaign videos to animation and short films.
If you don’t know what you want to watch, every day the site’s staff selects favorites.
The site can also be a getaway from boring commercialized TV shows. Some filmmakers have offered their own short film series. Break-ups: The Series just won the Vimeo Award for Best Original Series. This series revolves around different couples who are about to break up, but with a fresh comic perspective.
I recently watched Elevators to Space by Chris Garcia on a recommendation from a friend, and now I can’t get enough of it. Elevators is a comedy about four astronauts on their way to space in an elevator.
If you don’t have enough time to watch all the videos you want, you can always finish watching later, as the site will remember it for you.
