T

he government says it will introduce a program to eliminate tuition fees for madrasa Islamic elementary schools on a limited basis.

Religious Affairs Minister Suryadharma Ali said on Monday he would see if the tuition elimination program could be implemented nationally.

“If the program to eliminate tuition at Islamic schools works, it will ease education problems since the majority of [such] students come from poor families,” he said as reported by detik.com news portal

Most, or 91.5 percent, of Islamic schools in Indonesia are private. Suryadharma said the ministry has budgeted Rp 27 billion (US$3.02 million) for education, including funds to send 500 street children to several Islamic boarding schools (pesantren).
