ersipura Jayapura’s star striker, Boaz Solossa, who was recently named the world’s 53rd-ranked goal scorer by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS), is among the 19-member national squad that will depart to Asghabat, Turkmenistan, on Wednesday.

The squad was previously scheduled to depart a day earlier, but because their Turkmenistan visa applications had yet to be completed, their departure would be on Wednesday evening at 8 p.m. Jakarta time instead.

Indonesia’s senior soccer team completed their training session on Monday before the first leg of the Asian qualifier match for the 2014 World Cup against Turkmenistan on Saturday.

“Boaz has displayed good perfomance during today’s training. He is one of Indonesia’s best players. Although he came to training late, he has shown his willingness to defend the national team by calling me since last Friday,” assistant head coach Rahmad Darmawan said as quoted by vivanews.com on Monday. Boaz only joined team’s training on Monday.

Despite being known for his lack of discipline, Boaz led his Persipura Jayapura club to the Indonesia Super League (ISL) 2010-2011 championship. Boaz, who was also the top scorer in the recent ISL season, was banned from the national team by former head coach Alfred Riedl.

Rahmad, who has been assisting the new head coach, Wim Rijsbergen, said the squad was prepped to play a modified offensive formation of 4-3-3. “We will play both defense and offense equally,” Rahmad said as quoted by kompas.com on Monday.

Rahmad explained that Monday’s training was mainly to prep the players’ teamwork, game organization and set pieces.

New PSSI chairman Djohar Arifin Husin, who was present during the team’s training session on Monday said the team needed to depart earlier due to a 10-hour transit in Istanbul, Turkey, before reaching Turkmenistan.

Of the 25 national players attending the training sessions since Friday, 19 were chosen for the squad that will depart to Asghabat, Turkmenistan, on Wednesday.

Djohar also promised that he would further discuss with Riedl and the National Team Board (BTN) the settlement of the former head coach’s contract.

“Nevertheless, Riedl has helped [the national team], so everything must be settled on good terms,” said Djohar as quoted by goal.com Indonesia.

Indonesia and Turkmenistan’s second leg match is on July 28, at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta.
