our comments on the incident that killed two people and wounded dozens as police used force to end a protest by local residents rallying against a mining company in Bima regency, West Nusa Tenggara:

I see similarities in what happened at Freeport, Mesuji and Bima regency. Business, if not to say money, has the power over our government.

Business has defeated our right to live. It means that our government has lost its role to govern us rightly according to our constitutional principles.

Of course, now is the time for our government to rethink its role, existence and goal in governing us. A decision or policy has to prevent the same incident from happening again.

I think the government has to use its authority to stop this.

The rich will always have the upper hand; money can buy anything and everything now is in our beloved nation called Indonesia.

It doesn’t work or apply to all people though.

If the police standard operating procedures include shooting people fatally with minimal provocation, then the country is still uncivilized and barbaric. Are they going to do this at Newmont’s proposed mine at Elang, or at Indotan’s mine at Lombok? Why is Mobile Brigade (Brimob) so barbaric and brutal?

They only protect the rights of the rich and wealthy at the expense of the ordinary people.

Patty Alvarez

The local government is the blood sucker of its own people.

I think we should change the law in Indonesia. Let the people have their right to protect themselves and their environment by allowing them to have firearms.

So many times we have witnessed officers who play by the law of the jungle (just like Rambo) simply for the sake of money. They provide security and brutality for their own rewards (money, gift, cars, house, etc.)
