n American was found dead on Tuesday evening after falling from the 29th floor of Mediterania Garden Apartments in Tanjung Duren, West Jakarta, to the side of the pool, says the police.
Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said on Wednesday that the police were questioning witnesses Dody Muflihun, who was standing near the pool when the incident occurred at around 10 p.m., and Deviana, a local resident, to decipher the reasons behind the death of Oakley Bernard Hubert.
“The team is trying to find out whether the man committed suicide or if he was murdered,” Rikwanto said, adding that police found alcohol in the victim’s apartment.
He said Hubert was found with his head, left and right hands and thighs badly injured. Hubert’s body was immediately sent to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) in Central Jakarta for an autopsy.
Hubert had his passport with him when he fell, a security guard at the apartment building said as quoted by kompas.com.
Tanjung Duren Police Precinct chief Comr. Indra Laksmana said police were also investigating a Canadian and a Singaporean, both of whom were Hubert’s friends. Hubert had been employed as an English teacher for a year at Bina Bangsa School.
Indra said that based on a preliminary investigation, Hubert had a few drinks with the Singaporean, identified as F, 37, before the incident occurred, reported tempo.co. He also said that the victim told witnesses about his personal problems.
Cases of homicide, suicide and individuals falling to death have frequently taken place at the apartment building.
In the last incident that occurred on Dec. 31, 2012, an 18-year-old woman identified as Indri, a housemaid, fell to her death from the 28th floor of the apartment building. Quoting her employer, police said she had been talking to someone on the phone on the day she was found dead. — JP/tam
