State-Owned Enterprises Minister Dahlan Iskan has made another controversial move by considering an offer to develop marijuana farms for medicinal purposes.
Dahlan, a media tycoon and potential presidential candidate, said on Tuesday that a pharmacist had suggested he get involved in this agricultural business. 'A pharmacist suggested that state-owned enterprises [SOEs] should develop marijuana fields for the production of medication,' he said in Jakarta as quoted by Antara.
Your comments:
I'm concerned about the research and information that Dahlan is quoting. Some random pharmacists have an idea and all of a sudden a drug that has led to hundreds of people on death row for smuggling the stuff is the next big thing in agriculture?
How one quickly can turn on the sniff of a dollar. Also, pot doesn't 'cure' cancer or any other disease, it has pain relieving qualities.
There are too many charlatans in Indonesia already selling miracle cures. I think it's fitting anyhow: Sell people tobacco and create an epidemic, then sell them pot to cure/relieve it.

They will do anything for money and a large majority of this will end up on the streets for regular users anyway. Why don't they just decriminalize it and then they can tax it?
Joe
It is an extraordinary idea from our minister.

It is just another anachronism of Indonesian politics: confusing cannabis with criminality.
The medical potential of cannabis is not in any doubt.
But Indonesian politicians don't think about new revenues for small farmers to enable them to pay an appropriate price for energy but just generating new businesses for their special friends.
With friends like these who needs enemies!

All types of illegal drugs have versions that can be used medicinally. Opioids, coca derivatives, amphetamines and yes, even cannabis has been proven to help with certain conditions. It seems illogical not to use it if it's natural and useful.

The minister might risk a death sentence when we extrapolate the law on drug users and dealers.
