T

he Water and Air Police (Polairud) Unit of the Barelang City Police has launched a campaign on social care to prevent suicide as a response to the high suicide rate in Riau Islands, especially at the Barelang Bridge.

Barelang stands for the islands of Batam, Rempang and Galang, which constitute Batam city, the province’s largest city.

The campaign targets residents in coastal areas, fishermen and users of sea transportation.

Barelang Police Polairud Unit chief Comr. I Kade Dwisuryawandana said on Thursday that suicide prevention is a collective responsibility. He asked people to be more sensitive about the psychological pressures on the people around them.

“We ask all the people to be more caring, to pay attention to each other and to not close themselves,” he said.

“If you have a serious problem, do not keep it to yourself, immediately talk to your family, friends or trusted parties, including the police.”
