Transportation experts have called on the city administration to require all vehicles to undergo emissions tests and to campaign for the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to cope with air pollution, which has reached an alarming level.

Andi Rahmah from the Community for Leaded Gasoline Eradication (KPBB) said the city already had the 2005 air pollution control bylaw and the 2007 gubernatorial regulation on emission tests, but that the current administration had yet to show its political will to control air pollution.

She said the two regulations had not been enforced mainly due to the lack of coordination among relevant authorities, especially the environmental agency, the transportation agency and the police.

The city administration should concentrate on the development of public transportation.

It should also take steps to quickly complete the ongoing road projects that are dragging on.

Twenty-four-hour construction is a major cause of noise pollution.

It'€™s horrible that in the same area, three to four mall constructions are ongoing without giving a thought to how much traffic these malls will bring.

It'€™s not difficult to add liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) bowsers to gas stations as is done in other countries.

It'€™s ridiculous that Indonesia continues to import subsidized pollution when it is one of the world'€™s leading suppliers of LPG.

Introduce cheap LPG and subsidize the conversion kits, as is done overseas, then the transition would be much easier and it would solve the subsidized fuel issue.

Make it compulsory for all new cars to run on clean energy and only motorcycles to run on petrol, which should also be mixed with ethanol.

For diesel fuel, stop importing below standard diesel that causes black smoke even in newer vehicles. Provide safer versions of this fuel and Indonesia will start to be a modern, industrialized society.

A modern injection gas system drives more smoothly than petrol cars.

I converted my Nissan Patrol and I have got back my investment through cheaper running costs. My car runs better and I have reduced my pollution significantly.

The really big deal starts from our human resources. With support from President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Indonesia needs to create new fuel that comes from natural resources.

I appreciate that the city administration requires all vehicles to undergo emissions tests, but wouldn'€™t it be better if the government focused on higher priorities, such as enforcing driving license tests, curbing the uncontrolled growth of vehicles and enforcing discipline on traffic users?

By doing these things first, it will make emission tests easier.

I thought buses and trucks already had to undergo annual tests. I'€™ve spoken to drivers of questionable vehicles and they say they undergo an annual check, but they pay money to pass.

It'€™s a pity that the Jakarta administration doesn'€™t do anything to manage the capital'€™s air pollution.

Noise pollution caused by motorcycles is getting worse. It seems Jakarta is a problem too complex for the current administration to solve.
