T

he Jakarta Philharmonic Orchestra is slated to perform the songs of Ismail Marzuki, a national hero and one of the biggest composers in the country, at Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM), Cikini, Central Jakarta, on Thursday to celebrate the composer's 100th anniversary.

The concert will be held in Gedung Teater Jakarta and will open at 7:30 p.m.

Among songs that will be performed are 'Kopral Jono', 'Rangkaian Melati', 'Indonesia Pusaka', 'Halo-Halo Bandung' and 'Djuwita Malam'.

The concert, which is endorsed by the city administration, is being held to celebrate the country's legendary composer and to introduce the individual and his work to a younger generation.

'We aim to promote the nationalistic spirit, which was much depicted in Ismail Marzuki's work, to a younger generation. We also aim to pay respects to one of our biggest composers of all time,' Jakarta Philharmonic Orchestra leader Neneng Raharja said on Tuesday.

Joining the orchestra will be Mariam Tamari, a Japanese-Palestine opera singer who resides in France.

'It's my first time encountering this work but I know that he's one of the most important composers in Indonesia and it's a great honor to be able to sing this beautiful music,' Tamari said.

'I'm doing my very best for this honor and will communicate what he wanted to communicate,' she added.

Ismail Marzuki, a native Betawi, was born in Kwitang, Senen Batavia, on May 11, 1914, and died on May 25, 1958, when he was 44-years-old in Tanah Abang, Jakarta.

Among his most popular songs was 'Rayuan Pulau Kelapa', which was regularly broadcasted on national channel TVRI during the New Order regime.

He was dubbed a national hero in 2004.
