rade Minister Gita Wirjawan has been awarded an honorary doctorate in business administration from Naresuan University in Phitsanulok, Thailand.

The university said Gita was a promising Indonesian leader that had significantly developed the country's economy and acknowledged his philanthropic activities through the Ancora youth foundation.

"Appointed Trade Minister in 2011, he employs his international experience to promote and sustain international investment in the country. He also realizes how education is important to the young generation," Gen. Siri Thiwaphan, deputy chairman of Naresuan University council, told a reception tailored to honor the honorary doctorate recipients on Wednesday night.

Former ASEAN secretary-general Surin Pitsuwan and the Philippines' Secretary of Education Armin Altamirano Luistro were among this year's award recipients.

Commenting on this, Gita acknowledged that at first he was a bit surprised.

"I asked my staff to find out about the award and it turned out that this is a very serious matter. I feel honored," he said.

Education Minister Muhammad Nuh received an honorary doctorate in 2012.
