T

he Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) has urged the government and the National Police to seek and arrest those responsible for uploading a video showing the classroom beating of a fourth grade female student at SD Trisula Perwari elementary school in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra.

'We want the Communications and Information Ministry and the National Police's criminal investigation division to find the person who uploaded the video. Any video that contains violence may not be uploaded to a publicly accessed website like YouTube because children's actions can be influenced by it," KPAI secretary Erlinda said on Monday as quoted by kompas.com.

Public outcry emerged on Saturday after a video entitled "Violence against Elementary School Students" (Kekerasan Anak SD) was uploaded on YouTube.

The one minute and 53 second video was uploaded by an individual with the account name, Bukitinggi Info. It displayed a female student being bullied by one female and four male classmates in the corner of a classroom.

The female student was seen crying as the five students punched and kicked her while other students watched.

Erlinda said that teachers of SD Trisula Perwari should be held responsible because the incident occurred on campus.

She added that the KPAI had yet to conduct a direct inspection of the elementary school but that the commission had contacted officers from a local child protection agency in West Sumatra to help gather case data.

Meanwhile, National Education Ministry inspector general Haryono Umar said that his ministry had formed a fact-finding team to investigate the bullying incident.

Haryono added that the team flew to Bukittinggi on Monday morning.

Bukittinggi Education Agency secretary Sosiawan Putra said that the teacher was not in the classroom when the incident occurred.

He said that the incident occurred on Sept. 18. (alz/nfo)(++++)
