moderate earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale jolted Banda Aceh and surrounding areas on Friday morning, prompting local residents to scramble out of their homes in panic.
The local Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the epicenter of the quake was at a latitude of 4.68 degrees north and a longitude of 94.79 degrees east, at a depth of 85 kilometers, or some 101 km southwest of Aceh Jaya regency.
However, residents who were on their way to work did not feel the impact of the earthquake. "I did not feel the earthquake because at the time it happened, I was driving to my workplace," said Citra Dewi, a resident of Banda Aceh, as quoted by Antara news agency.
According to the BMKG, Friday morning's earthquake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami, as occurred some 10 years ago in the area.
On Dec. 26, 2004, a powerful earthquake measuring 8.9 on the Richter scale rocked parts of Aceh province and claimed more than 200,000 lives.
An ensuing tsunami swept through numerous regencies in the province, devastating more than 120,000 houses and public facilities. (hhr)
