he former chairman of House of Representatives Commission VII on energy and environment, Sutan Bhatoegana, stood trial at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Thursday on charges of accepting a US$140,000 bribe from former Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry secretary-general Waryono Karno.
Prosecutor Dody Sukmono accused the suspect of accepting the bribe in connection with the deliberation of the ministry's budget in 2013.
'To make the deliberation proceed in a smooth manner, Waryono Karno asked the defendant to directly preside over the budget's deliberation so that the budget could be arranged in accordance with the ministry's will,' he said in a hearing on Thursday.
Prior to the hearing between the commission and the ministry, Waryono allegedly asked a subordinate, Didi Dwi Sutrisnohadi, to prepare funds for the House commission, but he refused. Waryono reportedly then instructed another subordinate, Ego Syahrial, to seek help from the Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Special Task Force (SKKMigas). He allegedly received the funds from SKKMigas head Rudi Rubiandini through his subordinate Hardiono.
The funds were earmarked for four commissioners, who allegedly received $7,900 each and 43 commission members who received $2,500 each.
Waryono asked two subordinates, identified as Agus Sumarta and Iryanto Muchyi, to hand the money to Sutan at the House building through the latter's assistant Muhammad Iqbal.
'Muhammad Iqbal brought the money inside a paper bag to Sutan's office, but the suspect whispered, 'No here where it can be witnessed by other people'.' Dodi said in quoting Sutan.
Sutan was charged under Law No. 20/2001 on the revision of the 1999 Corruption Law. (rms)(++++)
