The Indonesian World Record Museum declared on Thursday that a new record on playing the angklung had been created when some 20,000 people, mostly students, played the bamboo musical instrument at the Siliwangi Stadium in Bandung, West Java.
The new record was created during the Angklung Harmony for the World, 20,000 People Playing Angklung gig, a side event of the 60th Asian African Conference Commemoration (AACC).
"We've recorded that this angklung-playing event by Bandung citizens not only broke the Indonesian record but also the world record," museum vice director Oscar Semesta Susilo said as reported by Antara news agency.
"There were 20,000 people playing the angklung while in the previous record in Jakarta there were only 11,000 people."
Oscar presented the new record certificate to Bandung Mayor Ridwan M. Kamil who said the record was an achievement of its own for Bandung city administration, West Java provincial administration and the entire population.
West Java Governor Ahmad "Aher" Heryawan said the angklung carried the theme of togetherness.
"The angklung is never played alone. Therefore the anglung symbolizes togetherness. Asian-African togetherness," he said.(nvn)(+++)
