he Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) urged Muslims to peacefully observe Isra Miraj (Prophet Muhammad's Ascension Day) on Saturday, which will fall two days after Christians celebrate the Ascension Day of Jesus Christ.
'Muslims should use the Isra Miraj and the Ascension Day holidays to stress the identity of Islam as the blessing for the universe. All elements under the MUI NTT want Isra Miraj to be observed as momentum for building peace,' MUI NTT secretary Mandarlangi Puaupa said in the NTT capital of Kupang on Wednesday.
Mandarlangi made the call after he was informed that the radical Hizbut Tahrir group planned to hold a mass gathering during the Isra Miraj. 'MUI NTT strongly rejects [the HTI's plan],' he said as quoted by Antara news agency.
MUI NTT, he said, also urged residents to observe the holidays by building good relations among religious groups.
'Activities that tarnish [religious harmony] should be banned,' Mandarlangi said. (++++)
