AKARTA: The city administration plans to buy helicopters to help the Jakarta Fire Department fight fires in the capital.
City secretary Saefullah said on Thursday that the helicopters would be operated with the help of the Air Force.
'It's time for Jakarta to have more modern fire-fighting equipment. The helicopters can help the Fire Department extinguish fires that break out in skyscrapers,' Saefullah said at the Jakarta Police headquarters.
The plan was drawn up following the fire that ravaged the Wisma Kosgoro building on Jl. Thamrin, Central Jakarta, in March, when the Fire Department seemed unprepared to handle a fire that roared through the building's 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th floors.
'The firefighters [at that time] tried hard to reach the high-rise building, but they lacked proper equipment,' Saefullah said.
Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Tito Karnavian revealed that as of July the police had listed 421 fires in Greater Jakarta.
'The number of fires in the capital tends to rise during the dry season. All stakeholders and residents should pay more attention to this,' Tito said.
