City-owned Sarinah shopping center on Jl. M.H. Thamrin in Central Jakarta caught fire on Thursday, causing panic among employees working in the building and worsening traffic gridlock along the major road outside the mall.

Tribbunews.com reported that the fire started to raze the 14th floor of the building at 10.30 a.m., forcing hundreds of workers to flee from their workplaces. Afterward they crowded together on the ground, taking pictures of the burning building.

Eye witnesses said that the fire started from Masterpiece Family KTV karaoke, owned by noted musician Ahmad Dhani.

Harun, one of the firefighters, said that the City Fire Department deployed 21 firetrucks to extinguish the fire and they managed to extinguish the fire at 11:30 a.m. The fire trucks started to leave the location at 12.30 p.m.

Head of City Fire Fighting and Disaster Management Agency Subejo said that two people, working on the 14th floor of the building suffered minor injuries and had received treatment at a hospital.

The police are still investigating the cause of the incident. (bbn)
