Prabowo arrived in St. Petersburg on Wednesday for a two-day official visit at Putin’s invitation, where the two leaders engaged in discussions on “the latest global developments and issues of common concern” to mark the 75th anniversary of Indonesia-Russia relations.
During their meeting on Thursday at the Constantine Palace, Prabowo thanked Putin for the invitation and warm reception on his first visit to Russia since taking office, noting that bilateral ties between the two countries have “grown rapidly”.
“Our relations continue to improve across various sectors,” Prabowo said, highlighting progress in economic cooperation between the two countries.
He also cited the fact that high-level exchanges between the two countries have continued to increase, noting that he had met Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov twice in Jakarta in less than a year and once in St. Petersburg just as Prabowo arrived on Wednesday. Prabowo himself visited Russia in August 2024, when he was president-elect and defense minister, and at the time pledged to strengthen the two countries’ relationship once in office.
At Thursday’s meeting with Prabowo, Putin praised the steady growth in Russia-Indonesia relations, citing rising trade volumes and expanding cooperation in areas such as agriculture, space exploration, energy and military-technical collaboration.
He also welcomed Indonesia’s full membership in the BRICS group of emerging economies, saying that he “hopes that Indonesia will make a significant contribution to the organization’s activities”.
