The Lentera student magazine retracted from circulation for publishing stories about the 1965 killings in Salatiga, Central Java, has continued to gain support from press organizations and human rights groups, saying that the retraction could set a bad precedent for press freedom in the future.
'We consider the incident surrounding the Lentera magazine to be a form of stifling press freedom,' said Rofiuddin, the chairman of the Semarang-chapter of the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) in Semarang on Wednesday.
He referred to the Satya Wacana Christina University's (UKSW) measure to order the retraction of Lentera Edition 3/2015, with a cover story entitled 'Salatiga Kota Merah", from circulation on Friday. The magazine's third edition tells stories of victims of the massacre of Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) supporters and suspected members in Salatiga in 1965.
Lentera's editorial team also said that on Oct. 9, the Salatiga Police questioned the team members in their investigation into magazine.
Rofiuddin said that after examining the case, AJI Semarang concluded that the magazine editorial board did not make any mistake.
The AJI Semarang chairman later asserted that it was not a problem for a student magazine to be distributed outside the campus. 'A student press should not limit itself by distributing its products only within the campus. A student press must be competitive,' said Rofiuddin.
The press activist said that such an incident in which a magazine is retracted should not happen again in the future. 'Lentera is not standing alone. Many parties are ready to support it,' he said.
To express their support of Lentera's editorial board, AJI Semarang together with the Indonesian Student Press Association (PPMI), the Legal Aid Institute (LBH) Semarang, the Semarang-chapter of the Indonesian Legal Aid and Human Rights Association (PBHI) and student press organizations across Central Java and Yogyakarta are scheduled to hold a peaceful rally at Taman Budaya (Cultural Park) Raden Saleh, Semarang, at 2 p.m. local time on Friday.
