Jakarta Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama has instructed the Jakarta Bina Marga (Road) Agency to demolish the bridge under the flyover in Kalibata, South Jakarta, as it causes flooding in the area.
The low level of the bridge, which crosses the Ciliwung River in Rawajati subdistrict, disrupts the water flow when the volume of water increases during the rainy season.
Ahok said the removal of the bridge could be implemented this month if the tender process could be completed.
"The water will flow smoothly if the bridge is dismantled," he added.
Previously, Jakarta Water Management Agency head Tri Djoko Margianto said that large amounts of garbage in the rivers contributed to the worsening floods in many areas.
He said piles of garbage like those that blocked the water at Kalibata Bridge caused flooding in the area.
Following flooding on Sunday and Monday, city administration workers were drafted in to clear garbage from the bridge in Kalibata and other places in the city. (bbn)
