ertamina EP, a subsidiary of state-owned oil and gas company Pertamina, along with inhabitants of coastal areas near the company's West Java site, have teamed up with the Assolahiyah Community Learning Center (PKBM) to develop a shrimp paste business.
The initiative stems from the notion that education and creativity can be an alternative solution to ensuring a community-friendly economic system, according to Heru Saleh, the head of the PKBM.
Education forms the basis for self-reliance, Heru says, especially in economic terms. 'We want to help illiterate residents, school drop-outs, the unemployed and housewives,' he said.
Apart from receiving basic capital, participants are also trained to equip them with useful skills and expertise.
'Productive economic education is a big boost to potential. For example, illiterate people can be integrated into a top-notch shrimp-paste producing business,' he said.
With Pertamina EP providing support in the form of experts and funds, the program is hoped to reach its targets.
'The program can also enhance the quality and competitive edge of the product. PKBM is one of the biggest suppliers of shrimp paste to restaurants in Karawang, West Java,' he said.
