Julie Estelle and Tio Pakusadewo in Surat dari Praha (Letters from Prague).

The judges of the first Usmar Ismail Awards have named three film directors on their shortlist, selected from 146 Indonesian films than played in theatres from Dec. 1, 2014 to Feb. 29, 2016.

The nominees are Garin Nugroho for Guru Bangsa: Tjokroaminoto (The Nation'€™s Teacher: Tjokroaminoto); Angga Dwimas Sasongko for Surat dari Praha (Letters from Prague) and Joko Anwar for A Copy of My Mind.

The judging panel comprises 15 film journalists in local online and print media.

The event coordinator, Adisurya Abdy, said the Usmar Ismail Awards (UIA) would immortalize Indonesia'€™s '€œfather'€ of film, who contributed to the development of the industry during the early years of the country.

The first day of shooting of Usmar Ismail'€™s Darah dan Doa (Blood and Prayers) on March 30, 1950, has been coined National Film Day. Founding president Sukarno dubbed him '€œa genuine Indonesian director'€.

'€œUIA is expected to add to the reference of Indonesian films. The more events held, the better,'€ Adisurya said over the weekend.

The judges also selected contenders for the categories of director, male actor, female actor, male supporting actor, female supporting actor, director of photography, film editor, artistic director, sound director and score composer.

Teguh Imam Suryadi, the head of judges'€™ committee and public relations for the awards, said the ceremony would be held on April 2 and would be aired live by Trans7.

'€œAn extended judging panel is currently at work to select the winner for each category in contention.'€

The additional judges include film critic Ekky Imanjaya, a research student from the School of Film, Television and Media at the University of East Anglia, UK, Daniel Irawan, the founder of community-based film awards Piala Maya, Chaidir of Yogyakarta'€™s Kedaulatan Rakyat daily newspaper and Ipik Tanoyo of the Bali Post daily newspaper.
