he wife of an alleged terrorist arrested in Klaten, Central Java, with the support of civil society groups, is demanding that the National Police reveal the cause of death of her late husband, an alleged terrorist who died while being escorted to Yogyakarta to the address of a suspect he gave up.
The Muhammadiyah Youth Association, the youth wing of Indonesia's second-largest Muslim organization Muhammadiyah, is assisting Suratmi in her search for answers in the death of her husband. The group will proceed with the autopsy plan, the group’s chairman, Dahnil Anzar Simanjuntak, said on Friday.
"The autopsy will take place immediately. We will assist Suratmi until she gets her answers," Dahnil said.
The National Police's Densus 88 antiterror unit has been accused of physical abuse leading to the death of Siyono. The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) and several civil society groups have also vowed to support Suratami. The groups include the Indonesian Legal and Policies Studies (PSHK), Indonesian Legal Aid Institute Foundation (YLBHI), Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW), Dompet Dhuafa, and Jakarta Legal Aid Institute.
Suratmi previously reported the alleged abuse following her husband’s arrest on March 8 in Klaten. Siyono was covered in blood and bruises when his body was returned to his family, after being in police custody for four days.
Meanwhile, Komnas HAM commissioner Maneger Nasution said the commission would ensure that Suratmi's family had its rights fulfilled in accordance with the 1999 Human Rights Law.
The National Police chief has said that an autopsy on Siyono’s remains would help the government do better. "If Siyono indeed died peacefully then the country's name is clear, but if he died as result of abuse then the fog will be clear and we can do something about that," Maneger added. (rin)
