P

resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo called on United Development Party (PPP) leaders not to spend too much energy on unproductive debates and unnecessary conflicts.

He made the statement in response to the ongoing conflict between the Djan Faridz-led PPP leadership, formed in 2014 at a national meeting (Muktamar) in Jakarta, and the party’s splinter faction led by M.Romahurmuziy, who was elected in 2014 during a Muktamar in Surabaya, East Java.

Jokowi said he wished PPP leaders would come to the State Palace in Jakarta to introduce a new party leadership structure to him instead of settling their conflicts at the Law and Human Rights Ministry.

"I believe the PPP is mature enough to perform an internal reconciliation. It's okay if there are differences here and there, but it should be immediately resolved," Jokowi said in his speech during the opening of the PPP Muktamar at the Pondok Gede Haj Dormitory in East Jakarta on Friday.

Jokowi officially opened the party's eighth national meeting.

The three-day meeting was hosted by the PPP leadership elected at the 2011 Muktamar in Bandung. In 2011, then religious affairs minister Suryadharma Ali was appointed alongside Romahurmuziy as the party chairman and general secretary respectively.

The 8th Muktamar was held following the Law and Human Rights Ministry's decision on Feb. 16 to reactivate a decree that recognized the party's leadership formed at the Bandung Muktamar.

Jokowi reminded all PPP members not to further engage in competition, internally and at the individual level. The competition among PPP members should only take place once in every five years, when the party held a Muktamar, he said.

The PPP has divided into two factions, the Djan Faridz and Romahurmuziy camps. The party has been faced with a leadership crisis following a decree issued by the government with regard to Romahurmuziy's leadership. Early January, the Law and Human Rights Ministry revoked a decree it had issued in March 2015, which recognized Romahurmuziy as the PPP leader, after he was elected a chairman in the Surabaya Muktamar in 2014.

The ministry issued the decree as a follow up to a Supreme Court ruling which recognized the leadership of Djan Faridz, who had been elected at the 2014 Muktamar Jakarta.

In the 8th Muktamar, PPP members are expected to select a new chairman and leadership structure. The election is set to be held in a plenary meeting on Saturday.

During the meeting, the party members will also design the party's new rule and bylaws (AD/ART).

Djan Faridz refused to attend the meeting. However, three of his deputy chairmen, namely Epiyardi, Wardhatul Asriyah and Fernita Darwis, are in attendance. Wardhatul is the wife of Suryadharma Ali. (ebf)
