awmakers have reacted positively to the nomination of National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) chief Comr. Gen. Tito Karnavian as National Police chief candidate by President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo.
House of Representatives Commission III chairman Bambang Soesatyo of the Golkar Party faction said Tito, a three-star police general, was the best graduate from the Police Academy's class of 1987.
"If Tito passes screening by the House Commission III, we hope that he will be able to unify all factions in the force so that the police will be more solid in facing the challenges of an increasingly complex society," he said at the House complex in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Bambang hoped that Commission III, which oversees legal affairs, human rights and security, could complete the process, including the screening, before the Idul Fitri holiday. Then Tito’s nomination would be sealed at a plenary meeting scheduled for June 28.
Commission III deputy chairman Benny Kabur Harman of the Democratic Party faction said Tito's elevation to top cop would be good. "I don’t think it's a matter of young or old, but his ability," Benny said.
The 2002 National Police Law stipulates that the inauguration and dismissal of National Police chiefs must be accepted by the House. Jazilul Fawaid, a National Awakening Party (PKB) lawmaker, appreciated Jokowi's nomination of Tito. (ags)
