Murder suspect Jessica Kumala Wongso celebrated her 28th birthday on Sunday in East Jakarta detention center.
Dozens of well-wishers attempted to visit Jessica, who is accused of killing her friend Wayan Mirna Salihin, but only a few visitors were allowed to enter the detention center, including her mother, Imelda Wongso, her lawyer Hidayat Boestam and four friends.
Imelda looked sad when leaving the detention after celebrating Jessica’s birthday. “I can only hope she will be free soon,” she added.
Hidayat said the visitors took birthday cake, tumpeng rice, prayer books and a rosary, and other gifts for Jessica.
“There was no candle-blowing ceremony. There was also no special request from Jessica to her mother,” Hidayat said as reported by tribunnews.com.
Maria Elska, one of the visitors expressed her belief that Jessica is innocent “Don’t force Jessica to admit to something that she did not do,” she added.
Prosecutors have demanded the judges at Central Jakarta District Court sentence her to 20 years in prison. On Friday, Jessica lawyers will read their defense.
