he collapse of the Yellow Bridge connecting Nusa Lembongan Island and Nusa Ceningan Island in Bali, which caused fatalities, was due to overload and poor maintenance, the spokesperson of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said on Sunday.

The bridge collapsed on Sunday at around 6:30 p.m. killing eight people and injuring 34 others.

"We suspect [the bridge collapsed] due to overload as there were many people on the bridge, which caused the sling to break and collapse into the sea," BNPB spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said on Sunday, as reported by tribunnews.com.

Another reason was the bridge was reportedly damaged, even though several repairs had taken place, he said.

Local people were using the bridge at the time of incident as they celebrated the Nyepi Segara religious ceremony in Bakung Ceningan Temple. Nyepi Segara is the Balinese Day of Silence for the ocean, where local people refrain from conducting any activities at sea.

"The bridge was moving before it finally collapsed. There were motorcycle riders and people walking on the bridge when it fell into the receding seawater," Sutopo said, adding there were no details provided as to how many people were using the bridge at the time of the incident.

The local authorities continued to search for victims on Monday. (rin)
