A

uthorities have seized three foreign boats for allegedly operating illegally in the Natuna waters, Riau Islands, an official has said.

"In the past four days, two boats from Vietnam and one from Singapore have been detained for allegedly operating illegally," Indonesian Navy Western Region Fleet Commander rear admiral Aan Kurnia said on Monday, as quoted by tempo.co.

The two Vietnamese boats were arrested by an Indonesian warship, KRI Silaspapare-386, which was patrolling the waters on Oct. 13.

Authorities approached the boats that had been using trawl nets and fishing without official documents, Aan said, adding that fifteen crewmen were detained with three men from boat licensed BV-92764-TS and 12 from boat licensed BV-92765-TS.

The boats have also been taken to the Navy post in Sabangmawang Lanal Ranai, Riau Islands, for further investigation, he said.

Meanwhile, a Singaporean boat was arrested for allegedly smuggling goods into Indonesia. The boat, which was an LCT Toll Emperor, was carrying electronic items, furniture and glassware.

"The illegal goods are being moved to Sekupang pier, Batam," Aan said.

Authorities had detained 12 crewmen on board, all of whom are Indonesian citizens. The ship's crew said all the items belonged to Singaporean citizens, and admitted that they did not have an operating license.

"Batam customs is currently investigating the issue," Aan said. (liz/bbn)
