Colors of Indonesia: Producer Mira Lesmana delivers a speech while the production team and cast of Athirah look on. The movie won six awards at the Indonesian Film Festival (FFI) on Sunday evening.

While glamorous and busty looks are always welcome on the red carpet, the dress code at the recent Indonesian Festival Film (FFI) 2016 awards was dominated by a more modest appearance.

A touch of Indonesia was the fashion cue in the invitation cards for this year’s FFI awards night. The dress code was then translated into modified traditional wear with batik and ikat (handwoven cloth) as the buzzwords.

Team Athirah, for instance, had producer Mira Lesmana and director Riri Riza clad in monochromatic loose wear with simple yet unique batik motifs that characterize the Sejauh Mata Memandang label by Chitra Subiyakto.

The Miles Films’ production won big at the festival including the Best Film and Best Director awards.

Chitra, who also appeared in a matching dress of her own design, won Best Costume Designer for her work in Athirah.

Strutting along was Cut Mini, this year’s Best Leading Actress for her portrayal of the titular character, dressed in Biyan Wanaatmadja’s latest collection of batik motif in red shades that came with flimsy outerwear embellished with flowery embroidery.

Seasoned actress Jajang C. Noer appeared stunning on the red carpet with a modest kebaya paired with handwoven songket Batak from North Sumatra for the sarong and a silk batik selendang (hand scarf) by Obin to complete the traditional look. The grandmother character in Athirah pinned up her tresses in a simple bun accessorized with a crown-like Sumba hairpin, a plus for the whole appearance.

Also a Miles Films production, the cast of Ada Apa dengan Cinta? 2 (What’s with Cinta? The sequel) chose their outfits appropriately. Adinia Wirasti appeared in a monochromatic dress from Sejauh Mata Memandang, while Titi Kamal wore a bright red-and-gold modified kebaya with Balinese motifs by Ghea.

The ever-serene actresses Rima Melati and Widyawati walked in dressed in a bright pink Anne Avantie kebaya and a grandeur batik dress by Suli Darsono, respectively.

Indra Bekti, the emcee on the red carpet, got himself up in a batik suit by Batik Yudhistira, while actor Arifin Putra strode out in a suit and tie by Brutus Rumah Mode with a touch of silk batik.

Singer/actress Dea Ananda, who accompanied husband Ariel of Nidji band — a nominee for the Best Soundtrack award for the composition in Bangkit! (Rise!) — made a quirky choice of all-black dress with gold-colored zipper on the front and the embroidery of Jakarta’s iconic topeng Betawi on the back designed by Raegita Zoro.

FFI 2016 organizing committee members did not disappoint, with a body-hugging Iwan Tirta batik dress on Olga Lydia; an extravagant combination of organdy and batik by Ivan Gunawan on Wulan Guritno. Reza Rahadian, who received the Citra trophy for Best Leading Actor as the mean employer in comedy My Stupid Boss, wore a blue suit by Wong Hang with decorative sequins.

Team Ini Kisah Tiga Dara (This is the Story of Three Sisters) brought high fashion to the red carpet with Shanty Paredes appearing in a sparkly kebaya by Anne Avantie and Tatyana Akman in a stunning Rama Dauhan jacket and dress with a high bun updo.

Ashraf Sinclair was dressed in a tailor-made ikat tie with a Barli Asmara tux while wife Bunga Citra Lestari wore a lavish red dress with patches made of Palembang songket designed by Adrian Gan.

Laudya Cynthia Bella wore a long batik dress by Sapto Djojokartiko paired with a hijab. “I want to show that we don’t have to wear only [traditional] Muslim wear, because universal designs can also be made into a Muslim fashion look,” she said.

Biyan’s soft-toned dresses embellished with sequins or flowers were the most favored sartorial item for the actresses including Happy Salma, Kelly Tandiono and Chelsea Islan.

Action-specializing actor Yayan Ruhian, however, stole the red carpet with his out-of-the-ordinary look of peach-colored loose suit with red string belt made of ikat by Didiet Maulana.
