he Trade Ministry said Friday that it had warned online marketplace Tokopedia about selling “black market” smartphones, in an effort to ensure that companies were complying with the country’s regulations.
“We have warned them; the black market is prohibited in any country, for any kind of product,” Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukito told reporters in Jakarta.
Tokopedia recently banned the sale of four types of Apple smartphones on its platform — the iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, 7 and 7 plus — because Apple is not officially allowed to sell the phones in Indonesia, Kompas newspaper reported.
The Industry Ministry introduced in September a regulation that 4G LTE smartphones must have a certain percentage of local content in their hardware or software.
“Yes, there is an [official] letter from the Trade Ministry. We hope that this act is not selective [for only one company],” said Tokopedia CEO William Tanuwijaya.
Besides Tokopedia, Enggar said the ministry had also sent official warning letters to e-commerce platform Lazada Indonesia and other online services. (win)
