AKARTA: Dangdut singer Ikke Nurjanah has enjoyed her stint as a guest lecturer at Pittsburgh University in Pennsylvania, US, for students majoring in ethnic music.

“They showed interest and were eager to learn about singing dangdut, which is distinguished by melodious vocals that not all Indonesians can even master,” she said as reported by kapanlagi.com on Wednesday.

She presented the history and development of dangdut, known internationally as Indonesian popular folk music, as part of the “America seduced by dangdut 2016” cultural program in September, with support from the Creative Economy Agency (Bekraf).

The presentation was the continuation of an initial lecture in 2010.

Ikke, whose full name is Hartini Erpi Nurjanah, said she had a mission to introduce dangdut music to the world.

“We have a lot of work to do where we have to establish the industry at home and produce dangdut songs with international appeal for the purpose.” — JP
