he National Police held their second meeting on Tuesday with prosecutors to speed up the legal process of Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama’s alleged blasphemy case.
Brig. Gen. Agus Andrianto, the general crimes director at the National Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim), said with coordination between the police and prosecutors, it was hopeful that the handover of Ahok’s case dossier would run smoothly.
“We hope that with a good understanding about the case, the [prosecutors] will accelerate the process,” said Agus at police headquarters on Tuesday. He cited National Police chief Tito Karnavian’s commitment to complete Ahok’s case dossier within two weeks.
Agus said the police did not have any authority with which to direct prosecutors in making charges against the suspect. However, he believed the prosecutors had followed the police’s investigation process, including the governor’s case screening last week.
The police have questioned 24 witnesses since Ahok was named a blasphemy suspect on Nov.16.
Agus said the police were also set to question Habib Rizieq, the chairman of Islam Defenders Front (FPI), as a religious expert to complete Ahok’s case dossier. The police would let the governor bring more witnesses for his interrogations, he explained. (ebf)
