akarta Police are preparing the North Jakarta District Court, which is temporarily located at the former Central Jakarta District Court building on Jl. Gajah Mada, Central Jakarta, ahead of Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama’s first blasphemy trial scheduled to take place at 9 a.m on Tuesday.
The court visitors and reporters, who have crowded the court since 5.30 a.m, have been ordered to wait outside the building while the police secure the location.
“We still have our personnel inside the court to secure the site," Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Raden Prabowo Argo Yuwono said in front of the court on Tuesday. Visitors could enter the court once the process is finished, he explained.
On Monday, Central Jakarta Police spokesman Comr. Suyatno said the police would deploy 2,996 personnel to secure the court area as a massive protest, initiated by the National Movement to Safeguard the Indonesia Ulema Council’s Fatwa (GNPF-MUI) and Indonesian Muslim Solidarity, is set to be held in front of the court during the trial.
Security would be prioritized in the areas around the court, he said.
Jakarta Police traffic unit head Adj. Sr. Comr. Budiyanto said there would be 86 traffic officers who would be on stand by on streets around Jl. Gajah Mada during the trial.
Hours before the trial, the police placed their vehicles, including barracudas and water cannons, in front of the court. (ebf)
