A

s farmers brace for the upcoming harvest season, the price of bird’s eye chilies will decrease next month, the government says.

Agriculture Ministry director general for vegetable and herbal plants Yanuardi said farmers in chili producing centers, including Temanggung in Central Java and Kediri, Malang and Blitar in East Java, would harvest their plants at the end of January. Consequently, there would be an abundant supply of chilies, resulting in lower prices starting from early February.

The supply of bird’s eye chilies in February would reach 73,843 tons, outnumbering the demand of 68,386 tons, creating a surplus of 5,457 tons, Yanuardi added.

“Based on our field observation in Kediri, Temanggung, Banyuwangi, they [farmers] will harvest. Therefore, the supply from February and March will be secured, with a price decline to be seen as soon as February,” he said Friday as quoted by kompas.com.

Based on data from Jakarta Food Information, the average price of bird’s eye chilies in the capital stood at Rp 121,000 per kilogram (US$9.1) on Friday, up Rp 2,088 from the previous day. (lnd)
