he busy street of Jl. Fatmawati will not be closed entirely for the next six months during the construction of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system starting Feb. 4, as 3-meter-wide spaces on both the right and left sides of the road will remain open, an executive has confirmed.
PT MRT Jakarta director William P. Sabandar told reporters on Wednesday that even though narrow lanes would be accessible for vehicles, the management urged motorists to use alternative roads.
"We encourage motorists to use different routes to avoid the [traffic] congestion," he said.
He added that the narrow roads were prioritized for public transportation and private vehicles of residents living along the construction site of Haji Nawi station.
To make way for the construction of the MRT station, the number of vehicles passing through Jl. Fatmawati will be reduced between Feb. 4 and Aug. 11.
Private vehicles will be rerouted to Antasari or toward Pondok Indah during that time.
Jl. Fatmawati is expected to fully reopen starting Aug. 12.
