he National Police will deploy 600 personnel to secure the regional election in Buol regency in Central Sulawesi on Feb. 15 because Buol is considered a “vulnerable” region.

“Mobile Brigade personnel from Central Sulawesi arrived in Buol today and another batch from the Mobile Brigade headquarters in Jakarta is scheduled to arrive on Feb. 11,” Buol Police chief Sr. Comr. Mujianto said on Wednesday.

Mujianto said the situation in Buol was stable but the deployment was necessary to reassure voters considering rumors of threats, such as possible flooding, on election day. “I hope rainfall will not be too intense on voting day,” he said.

Last week, several neighborhoods in Buol experienced flooding after heavy rain.

Three tickets are contesting the regental election in Buol: incumbent Amiruddin Rauf-Abdullah Batalipu, Efendy Nonci-Syarmin DJ Daimaroto and Syamsuddin Koloi-Nurseha Batalipu.

Abdullah Batalipu is the cousin of Amran Batalipu, a corruption convict. Amran was acquitted by Palu Corruption Court, but last month the Supreme Court overturned the ruling in a cassation review and sentenced him to eight years in prison. (evi)
