T

he Kendari Police's bomb squad is investigating an explosion that damaged on Thursday morning the residence of incumbent Kendari Mayor Asrun, whose son Adriatma Dwi Putra is running for mayor.

Adriatma, who lives on the premises, was at home with his wife and household staff when the explosion occurred.

Nobody was injured in the explosion, which witnesses said could be heard from 100 meters away.

"Gegana [bomb squad]  is looking into the incident," National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Rikwanto said Thursday.

He said the explosion had damaged the garage and blown out windows at the house on Jl. Syech Yusuf, Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi.

By early afternoon, the bomb squad, which has cordoned off the residence, had determined that the gas tank, stove and refrigerator in the kitchen were still intact and it had yet to find any sign of an explosive device.

“We have called in forensics experts to examine the explosion site more thoroughly to confirm whether it was a bomb that exploded,” Southeast Sulawesi Police chief Andap Budhi said.

Three pairs are contesting the Kendari mayoral race: Abdul Rasak-Haris Andi Surahman, Adriatma Dwi Putra-Sulkarnain and Mohammad Zayat Kaimoeddin- Suri Syariah Mahmud. (dis/evi)
