Yogyakarta’s provincial Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu DIY) has reported that vote-buying could occur in regional elections and that compared to Yogyakarta municipality, Kulon Progo regency was more vulnerable to such issues.
The province is holding elections in the two regions on Wednesday.
“We’re deploying hundreds of volunteers to monitor the elections to prevent cheating,” Bawaslu DIY head Muhammad Najib said on Tuesday.
He said there were five possible types of fraud and violations in elections: tampering with the accuracy of registered voters; vote-buying; interruptions in logistics distribution; the involvement of election personnel in candidates’ teams; and deviations from guidelines in casting votes and counting them.
Bawaslu DIY records showed the highest possibility for fraud in Kulon Progo was in vote-buying, estimated to occur at 95 polling stations of the total 937.
In Yogyakarta, the agency mapped that the most likely type of fraud was deviations from guidelines, which would be closely monitored at 162 stations of the total 794 in the municipality.
“We will monitor the process and we have cooperated with volunteers from non-government organizations and universities,” Najib said.
The agency has deployed 400 volunteers for Yogyakarta and 900 for Kulon Progo.
Gadjah Mada University’s Center for Anti-Corruption Study (Pukat) researcher Zaenurrahman called on the public not to vote for candidates involved in vote-buying because they were likely to be corrupt if they took office. (evi)
