ersonnel of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) said they were forced to shoot dead a drug dealer from Aceh during an operation on Jl. Medan-Binjai Km.13, Deli Serdang regency, North Sumatra, on Wednesday.
Six others suspected to be members of the Aceh drug syndicate were arrested during the raid. They were identified as Andri, Hendra Saputra, Maulana, Safrizal, Saiful and Zakaria – all are from Aceh.
During the operation the officers confiscated 38 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, locally known as shabu-shabu, ready to be distributed in Medan, allegedly from the syndicate.
The head of the North Sumatra chapter of the BNN, Brig.Gen. Andi Loedianto, said the agency would continue to take tough but measured steps against drug dealers. He said such firm measures must be implemented given the distribution of drugs, especially in North Sumatra, had continued to increase recently.
Andi said the BNN personnel shot the drug dealer dead because the situation in the field forced them to take such action. He said the agency’s officers were allowed to shoot dead drug dealers if they fought back or resisted arrest.
“We don’t want to take any risks. If a drug dealer fights back or attempts to flee, we must shoot them,” Andi told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.
BNN personnel and the drug dealers exchanged fire after they attempted to flee to Jl. Medan-Binjai, Deli Serdang using two cars. Risman was killed after the car he was in was shot at by the officers. His body was taken to Bhayangkara Hospital on Jl. Wahid Hasyim, Medan, while the six other drug dealers were taken into custody. (ebf)
