ndonesia’s swimming legend Radja Murnisal Nasution passed away at the age of 66 on Thursday morning because of chronic diabetes. Radja had been hospitalized for a month.
“My father had been receiving medical treatment at the Jakarta Hospital in Semanggi due to his deteriorating condition,” Akbar Nasution, Radja’s youngest son of five siblings, told The Jakarta Post.
Akbar said that the family planned to conduct a service for Radja at 4 p.m. on the same day at the Tanah Kusir public cemetery in South Jakarta.
“The family wants the service to be held in a rather simple way and not be overexposed,” he added.
Radja’s remains were laid out at the Bumi Bintaro Permai housing complex in South Tangerang, Banten before the funeral service.
Radja, who was born in Kutaraja, Aceh, on Feb. 6, 1950 as the third son of seven siblings, was a national water polo athlete as well as the national swimming coach in the 1980s and 1990s.
He suffered from diabetes since 2008. He even had to lose his right leg because of the illness in 2012, but refused to back down as he continued to accompany his athletes who were participating in a clubs championship in Bandung, West Java.
