oordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Wiranto says former Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) chairman and Presidential Advisory Board (Wantimpres) member Hasyim Muzadi was a true figure of pluralism.

Wiranto recalled that Hasyim, who passed away on Thursday in his hometown of Malang, East Java, was a wise man who always approached problems with a broad perspective and never took sides in conflicts.

"He always said diversity was inevitable; we cannot deny it and we cannot let it become our reason for conflict. Diversity should be our reason to remain united as a nation," Wiranto said on Thursday.

"When he died, we lost an Indonesian man who really understood the principle of pluralism. Let's pray for him," he added.

The former NU chairman died at his residence in the compound of the Pesantren Mahasiswa Al-Hikam Islamic boarding school after being treated at the Lavalette Hospital for five days. He was 72 years old.

Hasyim reportedly suffered from exhaustion after visiting Australia recently for five days and visiting several places in Indonesia.(jun)
