According to a statement by the West Kalimantan Police, the boat’s motor malfunctioned roughly one and a half hours after it departed at 6:30 a.m.

“The heavy currents of the river caused the boat to lose control and collide with floating logs. The boat was damaged and eventually capsized,” the statement read.

Bujang Aswandi, a local, said the currents of the river were strong at the time the boat capsized. Locals reportedly immediately began searching for missing victims following the incident.

“The width of the river is around 40 meters. The current was very strong in some areas. Locals and a search and rescue team were deployed to help search for the victims who were carried away by the heavy currents,” Bujang told The Jakarta Post. (bbs)
