riwijaya Air Airlines will offer a new, daily route from Makassar in South Sulawesi to Semarang in Central Java starting on April 28.

The new route will provide passengers with the shortest travel time because the plane will not stop or transit in any other city, said Sriwijaya Air Group’s senior corporate communications manager Agus Soedjono.

The flight departs from Makassar at 6:10 p.m. local time, and arrives in Semarang at 6:55 p.m. Meanwhile, from Semarang, the plane departs at 7:30 p.m. and is scheduled to arrive in Makassar at 10:15 p.m.

"The plane that will serve the Makassar-Semarang route is a 188-seat Boeing 737 800NG," Agus said in an official statement released on Tuesday as reported by kontan.co.id.

The Makassar-Semarang flight is a potentially lucrative route as Semarang is a growing tourist destination and many students from Makassar and other cities in the province study in Semarang and its nearby cities, Agus added.

He also noted many people in Central Java worked in Makassar and other cities in eastern Indonesia.

The opening of the Makassar-Semarang route is expected to have a real impact on the development of tourism in both cities, Agus said.

With the new route, passengers could easily be connected to extending flights to other eastern Indonesian cities by using Sri Wijaya airplanes, he added. (bbn)
