nergy and Mineral Resources Minister Ignasius Jonan has inaugurated a 196-kilometer gas network that will serve 24, 000 household consumers in East Java’s provincial capital of Surabaya.

In his speech during the inauguration of the project, the minister stressed that in line with the directive of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, the government would continue its plan to expand gas use for electricity generation and for households.

He said the gas distribution through the network would cut the gas price. “Household consumers, connecting to the networks will save Rp 20,000 [US$1.5],” the minister said in Surabaya on Sunday as reported by Antara news agency.

The government always allocated a certain amount of funding to construct gas networks in various regions, said the minister, adding that the project in Surabaya cost Rp 221.9 billion and was designed to serve people in the middle- to low-income bracket.

The gas demand of 0.6 million metric standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) in Surabaya is supplied by PT Pertamina Hulu Energi West Madura Offshore, a subsidiary of state-owned energy company Pertamina.

Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini praised the efforts of the government and the state-owned gas distributor PGN to develop the gas network, which would be very helpful for the people. “With the network, the gas supply is safe, clean and ready any time," she said.

Energy and Mineral Resources’ oil and gas director general I Gusti Nyoman Wiratmaja Puja said that so far the government had developed gas networks in 14 provinces and served 186,000 households. (bbn)
