he head of the Center for Plant Conservation at Bogor Botanical Gardens (KRB), Didik Widyatmoko, said on Monday that in order to save rare and endangered orchids found in Indonesia's natural forests, cooperation with several private institutions was necessary.
“For the conservation of orchids, we have cooperated with the Indonesian Orchid Society [PAI], [state-owned postal company] PT Pos Indonesia, and [manufacturing company] PT Martina Berto Tbk, " Didik said.
He said important conservation steps being carried out included registering new species, cultivating seeds and reintroducing plants into their habitat of origin.
The PAI, in collaboration with the Natural Resources Conservation Agency and the KRB, has collected data and made efforts to conserve Indonesia's natural orchids.
The government recently ratified the International Trade Convention on Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), but Indonesia's natural orchids are still deliberately removed from their habitats and are traded domestically and abroad.
PAI secretary general Ennie D. Satoto said that national hybrid orchid production was only 21 million stalks, far below the production of chrysanthemum flowers, tuberose flowers and roses, which amount to hundreds of millions of stalks each year. (dis/wit)
