hamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) chairman Rosan Roeslani has reminded officials of the Directorate General of Taxation not to target participants of the tax amnesty, saying it would be unfair if they were treated like those who did not take part in the program.

He said the government had promised not to investigate participants of the nine-month tax amnesty that ended in late March. “The government has to respect the philosophy of tax amnesty, namely a tax pardon,” said Rosan as reported by tempo.co on Wednesday.

Rosan’s comments came in response to the government’s plan to issue a regulation on taxation. Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said the government regulation, the draft of which was being prepared by her ministry, would become the legal basis for tax officials to carry out their jobs to investigate tax evasion.

Directorate General of Taxation spokesman Hestu Yoga Saksama said taxpayers who were involved in any tax evasion and did not take part in the amnesty program, would be punished and made to pay 48 percent of their total wealth. He said the legal basis was the Law on General Provision and Procedure of Taxation.

The government failed to achieve its tax amnesty target as it could only obtain Rp 114 trillion (US$8.56 billion) tariff revenue from the participants from the target of Rp 165 trillion. Meanwhile, from the repatriated fund the government received only Rp 147 trillion from the target of Rp 1 quadrillion. (bbn)
