Yash Raj Films’ movies are known to be unique love stories as seen in Fanaa, Bachna Ae Hasseno, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Jab Tak Hai Jaan.
The production company’s latest film, Meri Pyaari Bindu, tells a love story of a character named Abhimanyu Roy (portrayed by Ayushmann Khurrana).
Abhimanyu is a successful novel writer who is famous for writing about sexually active characters in his stories. He is not bothered by the scorn he often receives on television chat shows because his novels sell well.
Behind Abhimanyu’s success, however, there is a sad love story from his past that begins to unravel when he receives a call from his parents who tell him that they are divorcing.
He immediately packs his bags to see his parents and heads back home to Kolkata only to find out that he is being tricked.
His parents want him back home and they think the only way to make him return to Kolkata is by telling him that they are divorcing.
Disgruntled, Abhimayu tries to return to his work and while doing so he looks out of the window and sees the house of Bindu Shankarmarayanan (played by Parineeti Chopra), his ex-fiancé.
The event inspires him to write a story about his past for his new novel. The film then takes us to his past, when he meets Bindu for the first time when they are very young.
The first time he lays eyes on her, he falls in love with her even though he is only around 6 years old. They attend the same school until college.
Bindu and Abhimanyu practically live their lives together even though they live in different homes.
The novelist has always loved Bindu in a romantic way but the feeling is not mutual. This gives Bindu the upper hand in their relationship by making Abhimanyu comply with all of her demands to win her love.
They part ways when Bindu’s mother dies. After this, Bindu goes to Australia to stay close to her relatives. They both, however, keep in touch.
One day, however, Abhimanyu manages to catch a glimpse of Bindu inside a bus in India. He chases and finally catches her attention.
However, his heart is soon broken after learning that Bindu is engaged to someone.
The engagement does not work out and Abhimanyu once again tries to make Bindu his lover. He goes the extra mile by helping Bindu, who wants to be a singer, produce her first album.
The album does not sell well nor does Abhimanyu’s approach to Bindu. She continues to keep him in the friend zone and he eventually feels it is time to move on.
Thus Abhimanyu makes a career out of writing sexualized novels.
Akshay Roy does an excellent job in directing the artists for his film.
Like many previous Yash Raj Films’ movies, the sets are very detailed and realistic.
Chopra’s acting is superb in bringing out the role as Bindu. So also does Khurrana, who gives a surprisingly good performance.
The couple’s chemistry as friends is a life savior for the movie. They bring justice to their characters.
One discrepancy is Bindu’s questionable relationship with Abhimanyu. She is not in love with him in a romantic way.
She always treats Abhimayu as her friend but she still sleeps with him.
The movie’s editing also creates confusion.
The film portrays scenes from the past and then back to the present and sometimes it is hard to figure what is past and what present.
The songs written for the movie are catchy. Chopra sings “Maana ke Hum Yaar Nahin.” The song “Afeemi” has also become a hit in India.
If you are tired of watching romantic movies where you can predict the ending then go for this movie.
