View all search resultsMount Sinabung in Karo, North Sumatra, erupted on Saturday morning, spewing volcanic materials up to 4 kilometers in the air.
An official with the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, said the high-intensity eruption occurred at 6:45 local time.
Sutopo said the volcano also produced a 120-millimeter amplitude tremor and volcanic quake lasting 343 seconds.
The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center has maintained the alert status of the volcano at level IV, in anticipation of further eruptions.
The center called on residents and visitors to stay away from a 3-km radius of the mountain top.
The center also prohibited any activity for 7 km in the south-southeast sector, 6 km in the southeast-east sector and 4 km in the north-east sector of the volcano.

The center warned residents living near rivers and tributaries whose upstream are in the vicinity of the volcano to anticipate the danger of hot lava floods.
