he Indonesian Flight Navigation Service Institution (AirNav) has called on pilots flying over Central Java to be careful about unmanned hot air balloons released by residents during Idul Fitri festivities.
AirNav states that on Sunday it released Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) No. A2115 to ask airmen to be vigilant in regards to the balloons.
The NOTAM is valid for a month.

AirNav says on its official Twitter account @AirNav_Official that it has received reports from pilots who encountered hot air balloons flying close to their aircraft on Sunday.
The balloons were reportedly released by residents of Wonosobo, Central Java. Wonosobo is geographically part of airways W45 and 17N, AirNav stated.
A balloon can reach 20 meters in height and 8 meters in width. It is capable of flying up to 28,000 feet above sea level.

Some balloons burst when they reach the altitude of flying planes, AirNav states.
AirNav says the balloons could endanger flights.

“Damage to fuselage or windows would disturb cabin pressure and could put the flight in danger and harm the respiratory system for passengers and cabin crews,” @AirNav_Official tweeted on Tuesday.
AirNav has cited Transportation Ministerial Regulation No. 9/2009, which prohibits a person from operating unmanned air balloons without permission from air traffic controllers.
