T

he Research, Technology and Higher Education Ministry has developed 60 out of the 100 science techno parks (STP) to be developed by 2019, an official has said.

“Nine of the parks are directly managed by the ministry, while the rest are managed by other ministries, but under our supervision,” the ministry’s higher education director general, Patdono Suwignjo, said on Thursday.

The government hopes at least 22 of the parks will create new entrepreneurs by 2019, he added.

“This is tough challenge for us because we are not just developing factories that produce certain products, but we have to facilitate entrepreneurs to develop the companies that make innovations in technology and sell it to the market,” he said.

The development of the parks is one of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s nine national priorities to improve the country’s productivity and competitiveness in the fields of agriculture, manufacturing, renewable energy, mining and fisheries.

“We are pretty late in this. In other countries, they need 28 to 35 years for such a park to be able to produce good entrepreneurs,” Patdono said. (dis/bbn)
